To really make sure that your sensitive data (user names, passwords, credit and debit card numbers, etc) will not fall into wrong hands via some malicious keystroke logging program, you will need to use some software that encrypts your keystrokes and therefore makes it impossible to steal your personal data. Remember from this article that keyloggers record every keystroke on your keyboard and send the data to cybercriminals?
KeyScrambler Personal is a free program for home users. It scrambles your keystrokes while you are using Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox web browsers. Basically it replaces every keystroke with some other character - you type in "a" and Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox will see "a", but any keylogging program would see "+" (or some other random character).
KeyScrambler Personal does not protect your data in other programs, but it is enough to keep you safe online.
KeyScrambler is a third-party extension for Internet Explorer, so please make sure you have Enable third-party browser extensions setting enabled in Internet Options, Advanced tab.
To check that, open Tools menu in Internet Explorer and click Internet Options. Then click Advanced tab above and find the Enable third-party browser extensions check box. Make sure this box is checked. If not, check it, click OK to close Internet Options and restart Internet Explorer (close all open Internet Explorer windows!).
Open KeyScrambler download page and click on Alternate Download 1 or Alternate Download 2:
Update: KeyScrambler Personal download link has been incorrectly labeled by McAfee SiteAdvisor as a potentially unwanted program. Please ignore this warning by clicking Allow button. If this file contained something malicious, any antivirus, antimalware or antirootkit program would block it. They don't - it is a safe download.
Internet Explorer asks what you want to do with the file. Click Run:
After downloading, Internet Explorer verifies KeyScrambler's digital signature.
Windows XP users will see Internet Explorer Security Warning window. As long as Publisher is QFX Software Corporation, you are safe to click Run again:
Windows 7 users will see a User Account Control window asking whether you want to run the program. As long as Verified publisher is QFX Software Corporation, you are safe to click Run again:
KeyScrambler Setup Wizard opens, click Next:
Setup asks whether you want to check for updates. As you just downloaded the latest version, click No here:
Another lovely License Agreement, click I Agree:
Component selection screen opens. The browsers that are installed on your machine are automatically selected, so just click Next:
As destination folder is also fine, click Next:
Start Menu Folder is fine, too. Click Install:
After installing, KeyScrambler Personal Setup Wizard needs to restart your computer. Click Finish here and wait until your computer restarts.
The installing part is complete now.
After you log back on and open Internet Explorer, KeyScrambler Personal offers to read news about itself. Click No if you don't want to read it.
More importantly, there will be a new icon in Notification Area. It has letter "K" in the middle and it can have green or yellow background. If its background is green, your web browser window is open and active and KeyScrambler Personal is protecting your keystrokes. Otherwise, its background is yellow.
Please note that KeyScrambler Notification Area icon appears only when you are using Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox.
As KeyScrambler Personal has some not-so-good-looking overlay window turned on by default, right-click on its Notification Area icon and click Options...:

Select Display tab from above and click on Tray Icon. Then click OK to close options window.
And that's it!
You are now much safer online!
When there is an updated version of KeyScrambler Personal available, its Taskbar Notification Area icon displays "New version available" message when you stop your mouse pointer on it.
To update to the latest version, right-click the Notification Area icon and select New Version. Remember that the icon is displayed only when Internet Explorer is running?

A new Internet Explorer window will open with KeyScrambler Personal download page. Click Alternate download link and proceed exactly as shown in the beginning of this article.
There is an important exception, though! KeyScrambler cannot update itself while Internet Explorer is running, because this locks KeyScrambler files. You should close all open Internet Explorer windows after KeyScrambler Setup Wizard opens.
If you don't, you will receive a warning window. Close Internet Explorer windows and click Retry here after 10 seconds (this ensures that Internet Explorer process shuts down).
And here's the link back to KeyScrambler Personal setup part for updaters.
