Internet-connected applications and plug-ins such as Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Reader and Sun Java have great impact on the overall security level of your computer because outdated and unpatched versions of those apps enable ill-intended access to your PC via Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Google Chrome, Opera, etc) or their own security bugs. Needless to say, you must always keep the apps up-to-date.
To add an extra layer of security for many applications, read our Microsoft EMET article. But please bear in mind that this will not make updates unnecessary - you still should keep all applications up-to-date!
For Apple Safari, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Opera users there is a quick way of finding out whether most common browser plug-ins are secure and latest versions. Just visit Mozilla Plugin Check page and wait a few seconds until the check is complete. For all latest and greatest ones you will see a green Up to Date button. For insecure versions, click the Update button to download and install the current one.
Please note that not all plug-ins are known to Mozilla Plugin Check - you will see a gray Research button for those.
Adobe Flash Player is usually called Shockwave Flash there.
